Whether your selling your company, yourself or your product its important to go about it the right way to achieve your goals.

Here’s 7 quick tips to help you get there…

1. Have a specific goal in mind and focus on its outcome, the end result.

2. Align that goal with your client’s needs. It’s easier to sell if you are meeting their specific need.

3. Listen, don’t presume you know what their need is. Ask them questions.

4. Let them talk (you have two ears and one mouth for a reason).

5. Understand their feelings. People make decisions with their emotions.

6. You need to genuinely care. Don’t pretend as they will see right through it.

7. Don’t be a machine, show them your human side.

8. Always make yourself available, this builds reassurance and trust.

These points will help you to adopt the perspective of the potential buyer/client. This in turn will encourage them to use you!

I can’t help those that say no, but for those that say yes, then read on.

When Tony Blair, José Mourinho and last year’s Ryder Cup team take leadership advice from the most successful club manager in the world, then you may want to listen too.

On Sunday night Sir Alex Ferguson explained to the BBC his formula for building four new successful teams from scratch, just imagine doing this in your business. He won 13 out of 26 league titles and a host of European trophies by man management. Imagine doing this in your business.

What does he do that’s so magical?

Well last night he revealed some of his secrets, things that may be easy to say, but harder to follow unless we work at it. Things like ‘Get to know your team’. Learn about what they do, how they work, what they think, personally work harder than your team, get to work before them, leave after them, lead by example, be honest, be real, and be motivational to be the best.

Sir Michael Moritz, Venture Capitalist CEO also described what you may want to do to earn the respect that Sir Alex earnt from his players. “He could be the father confessor, the motivational speaker, the priest, the judge, the jury, the Lord High Executioner, the puppet master and the inspirational figure all in the course of one day.”

If I was to describe two things I took away from Sir Alex, it was his personal touch, his belief that everyone in the team is important, from tea boy to player and that the team is everything as illustrated by his ability to create young teams into giant slayers.

He would take every day examples to inspire his teams, including stopping training with 23 professional players and asking them to look to the sky and observe a V shaped arrow formation of geese as they flew overhead on their 4,000 mile journey to warmer climes. He would explain how each bird in the V shape would take it in turn to fly from the back to take it in turn to pull the rest of the team forward in their gruelling 4000 mile journey. Sir Alex would then turn to his squad, and say now if those birds can fly 4000 as a team, then surely you can give me 38 games to win the league.

If you have ‘catch up’ or a TIVO box then I would certainly recommend  watching or recording, its repeated on wendesday at 23.05 on BBC1.

The white tee shirt was originally issued as regulation underwear for the US Navy in 1913. It has become a lasting source of comfort and a relaxed style for men ever since, a modest wardrobe essential which reveals as much or as little as the man wearing it decides.

It became a hot trend to wear this item against denim and is still as popular today as it was then.

The white tee tells a good story, it’s unique, fresh and rugged but above all its intimate – probably due to its founding as underwear.

Some tee shirts can stay with you for years and life others look washed out in after a couple of turns in the machine, but it all depends on the price you pay for it.

According to David Moore of Headen & Quarmby in Manchester, who make boxer shorts says “You can buy a big name brand tee shirt and still end up with spirality which is where side seams twist after a couple of washes, it’s down to knits being cut slightly off-grain by manufacturers cutting out too many garments from too little fabric to save money.”

So how do you know what to look for when buying a good tee shirt?

  • Fit – Close but not tight, there shouldn’t be extra fabric around the body and it should be long enough to layer without bagging out at the bottom.
  • Feel – You want organic cotton in a high thread count for a perfect ratio of soft to strong, when it feels right, it is right.
  • Shape Integrity – Some tee shirts are constructed on a circular knitter which can give you those twisted seams post wash. A good tee shirt keeps its shape, simple as that – it’ll soften over time but that’s what you’ll love about it.
  • Seams – Watch out for over-locked stitching round the seam at the base of the neck. You don’t see Don Draper scratching his neck during a killer presentation. You want the comfort of a double stitched French seam which will lie flat without an itchy edge.
  • Ethical Credentials – Tee shirt manufacture is a heavy water consuming and polluting process particularly for the people doing the graft. Instead, buy a tee shirt which is carbon neutral and made by people earning a fair living wage in comfortable working conditions.

Penny Dreadful makes it simple.

The new PD 100% organic cotton tee shirt is now available at £26.00 each in soft grey mélange or honest to goodness white, with a not too high not too low v neck to knock some of that stiff US Navy regulation out of the frame.

To be successful in sales you need to focus on three critical elements:

  • Competence
  • Confidence
  • Commitment

Competence

This comes top of the list when selling as customers prefer to do business with people who bring more to the table than an order form or a contract.

  1. People who bring insight and ideas that clients can use to improve, grow, or transform their businesses will be successful.
  2. You must be knowledgeable about your own business, industry, products and services, but also about your clients – the more you know about your clients’ worlds, the better positioned you are to their needs.
  3. When you help your clients improve their businesses, they tend to keep you around, even when your competitors come knocking at their doors.

Confidence

This is what enables you to put your knowledge and skills into practice.

  1. You must have confidence in your company’s ability to deliver the outcomes promised by its products and services. Most importantly, you must have confidence in yourself to ask your and clients the questions that need to be asked…when they need to be asked.
  2. Confidence to share your thoughts and insights with them…even when it’s something they may not want to hear.
  3. Confidence to enter unknown ground knowing that sometimes, the outcome may not go the way you want, but nevertheless it will provide a learning experience.

Commitment

This activates the other two elements. Knowing what to do and how to do it is of little use if you don’t take action. Results come from motion, not meditation.

  1.  Commitment means binding yourself to a course of action regardless of your fear. Keep going!
  2. It means having a purpose greater than just closing another sale or earning commission. It’s easy to put tasks off, so don’t do what is easy, do what is right!
  3. Commitment also means being willing to invest the necessary time to properly prepare. Proper preparation, prevents poor performance. In turn your reputation will speak for its self.

Competence, confidence, and commitment are not only critical elements for success in the sales arena, they are the underpinnings of success in life.

When you bring these three elements together, a synergy effect is created. When your commitment to act is supported by your competence, and reinforced by your confidence, your potential for success is limitless.

Every day you can choose to eat a hamburger or a salad for lunch/dinner, today’s choice wont make much of a difference, but if you decide in favour of the hamburger for 300 days, you’ll have a much bigger problem to deal with. The same rule applies in business:

  1. Everyday you’ve got to hit it out.
  2. You’ve got to be hungry for business.
  3. Remember why you started, use that motivation to make the calls and get in the doors.
  4. Get out there and pursue your goals, pursue your market domination, not because you want to beat your competitor, but because you love to serve your customer.
  5. Don’t think negatively about prospecting, instead become more valuable- ring when there’s a significant listing or sale in their area. Its called being relevant and it counts. It makes a world of difference in your marketing.
  6. Never underestimate the power of a call- because personal connection works.
  7. Become a great marketer. Believe in yourself, in your customer and what you do.
  8. Because what you do really makes a difference.
  9. Remember the first person you need to convince on fee is you and that you get what you negotiate.
